Jacksonville Council of the Blind

We are the Jacksonville Council of the Blind—an active local affiliate of the Florida Council of the Blind (FCB), connected to the American Council of the Blind. Our purpose: to cultivate self-confidence, independence, and community among blind and visually impaired individuals in Jacksonville. Through fellowship, advocacy, and accessible programming, we strive to ensure every voice is heard, valued, and empowered.

Purpose and Philosophy

Join with us to help build the self-confidence and self-reliance that is needed to take our proper place in today’s world. We offer a sharing and caring atmosphere where experiences are shared, support is offered, and voices are amplified—especially when advocating for rights and accessibility locally, at the state level, and in Washington. fcb.org

This living mission drives our actions:

Advocacy and Awareness: A unified, amplified voice influencing policy on accessibility, inclusion, and equality.

Inclusive Fellowship: A welcoming space for connection, shared experiences, and peer support.

Information and Resources: Accurate, up-to-date referrals and guidance for community needs.

Empowerment through Resources: Partnerships that connect members to vital services and programs.

Looking Ahead—Strategic Goals & Action Plan

Emerging from our foundation, we plan to build in the next 12 months:

Community Feedback Loop: Conduct surveys and listening sessions to tailor all efforts to the lived experiences of Jacksonville’s blind community.

Expand Outreach: Enhance awareness through local media, civic partnerships, and accessible communication channels (audio, Braille, large-print).

Program Development: Launch assistive-tech demos and peer support workshops in collaboration with partners like the Florida DBS, FSDB, and the Talking Book Library.

Advocacy Projects: Coordinate with the Mayor’s Disability Council and FCB to raise visibility around accessibility policy and systemic needs.

Your Role — Be Part of the Movement

Whether you’re seeking support or offering it—there’s a place for you here:

  • Attend a meeting—your presence helps build our community.
  • Stay informed—progress in voicing our rights, assistive tech changes, local accessibility efforts.
  • Engage—join advocacy campaigns, volunteer roles, content creation, or event planning.
  • Invite others—friends, families, professionals—the more we grow, the stronger we are.

Our strength lies not in one voice, but in unity.
