Why Jacksonville Matters—Local Community Resources

Our Resources page is dedicated to helping Jacksonville’s blind and visually impaired community access essential support—locally, statewide, and beyond. To bring real-world support into our neighborhood, we partner with key agencies and organizations:

  1. American Council of the Blind: The American Council of the Blind (ACB) was founded in 1961 but many of its state affiliates and local chapters have a history that can be traced back to the 1880s. Our mission is to increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity, and quality of life for all blind and visually impaired people.
  2. Florida Council of the Blind: The Florida Council of the Blind (FCB), a state affiliate of the American Council of the Blind (ACB), is a statewide organization of blind people working to make life better through public education, legislative actions, and providing a statewide information and referral service through Project Insight. Established in 1953, the Florida Council of the Blind (FCB) is the largest self-advocacy and support group of its kind in the state with many local chapters and several special interest affiliate groups
  3. Florida Division of Blind Services: We are here to help blind and visually impaired Floridians achieve their goals and live productive and independent lives. Our services cover all ages from babies to senior citizens.
  4. Vision Education & Rehabilitation Center:  is a community-based rehabilitation program for adults and high school students with blindness or visual impairment. Training is made possible by the Florida Division of Blind Services and Florida State College at Jacksonville.
  5. CIL Jacksonville: we empower all people with any disability to achieve their independent living goals by providing community-based programs and self-directed services.
  6. Uzurv: Provides door to door transportation for eligible older adults and people with disabilities on behalf of the Jacksonville Transit Authority’s Connexion and Connexion Plus programs.
  7. JTA Connexion: is a paratransit service, providing destination-to-destination shared public transportation for people with disabilities who are functionally unable to use fixed-route services for some or all of their transportation needs, and for people who are transportation disadvantaged (TD).
